Small changes. Big benefits. A healthier future for your best friend.
Have you ever looked at your dog's bowl of dry food and wondered...
"Is this really enough?"
The answer might surprise you.
Despite what many advertisements suggest, there isn't a secret ingredient hidden inside even the most expensive kibble that will magically keep your dog healthy or help them live longer.
The truth is that most dry dog food is highly processed. While quality brands are carefully formulated to provide essential nutrients and meet your dog's basic nutritional requirements, the manufacturing process uses high temperatures that reduce many naturally occurring enzymes and other delicate compounds found in fresh foods.
That doesn't mean dry food is "bad."
In fact, for many families, it's the most practical, affordable and balanced way to feed their dog. Not everyone has the time or budget to prepare fresh or raw meals every day—and that's perfectly okay.
The good news?
With just a few simple additions, you can transform an ordinary bowl of kibble into a meal that better supports your dog's overall health.
Hi, I'm Alla.
After spending more than 30 years in healthcare and wellness, followed by years working closely with dogs as a professional groomer, I've learned one important lesson:
Good health isn't usually about doing one extraordinary thing. It's about consistently doing many small things well.
Today I'd like to share five simple ingredients that can help support healthy ageing, promote better digestion, reduce inflammation and contribute to your dog's long-term wellbeing.
These aren't expensive supplements or complicated recipes.
They're simple additions that almost anyone can use.
Secret #1 – Add Moisture Back Into Every Meal
One of the biggest differences between dry food and fresh food is exactly what its name suggests—it contains very little moisture.
Dogs naturally obtain a significant amount of water from their food. When eating only dry kibble, they rely much more heavily on drinking water to stay hydrated.
Adding moisture to every meal can make the food more enjoyable and may support overall hydration.
One of my favourite ways to do this is with warm, unsalted bone broth.
Simply pour a small amount over your dog's kibble and leave it for about five minutes before serving.
The kibble softens, becomes more aromatic and many dogs absolutely love it.
If you don't have bone broth available, warm water is also a wonderful option.
Important: Always choose bone broth made without onion, garlic or excessive salt, as these ingredients can be harmful to dogs.
Benefits of adding moisture
- ✔ Makes food easier to chew for many dogs
- ✔ Encourages hydration
- ✔ Increases aroma and palatability
- ✔ Creates a more enjoyable mealtime experience
Sometimes the simplest changes make the biggest difference.
🐾 Did You Know? Dogs evolved from wolves, who obtained most of their hydration from the prey they ate — which is approximately 70% water. Modern dry kibble contains only around 10% moisture, making added hydration especially beneficial for your dog's kidneys and urinary health.
Secret #2 – Feed the Brain, Heart and Joints with Omega-3
One of the most overlooked nutrients in many dogs' diets is Omega-3 fatty acids.
Many commercial foods naturally contain far more Omega-6 fats than Omega-3s.
While both are essential, too much Omega-6 without enough Omega-3 may contribute to ongoing inflammation within the body.
Inflammation isn't always obvious.
It can appear gradually.
Your once energetic dog begins sleeping more.
They hesitate before jumping into the car.
They seem slower on walks.
They become stiff after resting.
These changes are often blamed on ageing alone, but inflammation may also play a role.
Think of inflammation like a tiny fire burning inside the body.
Omega-3 works like water on that fire.
Research has shown that Omega-3 fatty acids support healthy brain function, heart health, skin health and joint function.
Excellent sources include:
- High-quality salmon oil
- Sardines packed in spring water (without added salt)
- Veterinary-approved fish oil supplements
Introduce Omega-3 gradually over several days to avoid upsetting your dog's stomach.
One important tip many owners don't know...
Omega-3 oils are extremely delicate.
Once exposed to heat, light and air, they begin to oxidise, reducing their quality over time.
Choose products from reputable manufacturers and store them according to the instructions on the bottle.
Your dog's brain, heart and joints will thank you.
🐾 Did You Know? Dogs can't make enough Omega-3 on their own. They need to obtain it through their diet, making it an essential nutrient for lifelong health — particularly for brain development in puppies and cognitive support in senior dogs.
